Star Wars Stuntman Avoids Jail Over £30k Benefits Fraud, £400k Spending

A former Star Wars stuntman, Gerry Sherard, 65, has escaped a jail sentence after admitting to fraudulently claiming £30,000 in benefits while simultaneously indulging in a lavish lifestyle costing £400,000. Sherard, who portrayed a stormtrooper in the 1983 film *Return of the Jedi*, appeared at Inner London Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to charges of false representation.

The court heard that Sherard falsely declared he had limited income to qualify for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). However, investigators uncovered evidence of significant spending, including luxurious stays at The Ritz and expensive private jet trips. The total amount spent on these high-end experiences amounted to approximately £400,000.

Prosecutors presented evidence detailing Sherard’s extravagant purchases, contrasting sharply with his claims of financial hardship. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) began investigating after suspicions arose regarding the discrepancy between his reported income and his apparent lifestyle. Bank statements and other financial records were scrutinized to build the case against him.

Despite the substantial fraud and the clear evidence of a luxurious lifestyle funded by taxpayer money, Judge Alexander sentenced Sherard to 18 weeks of community service and ordered him to repay the fraudulently obtained benefits. The judge cited Sherard’s age and previous good character as mitigating factors in avoiding a custodial sentence.

Sherard’s role as a stormtrooper in *Return of the Jedi* brought him minor fame, but it was his subsequent benefit claims and extravagant spending that ultimately landed him in court. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accurate benefit declarations and the consequences of defrauding the public purse. Further investigation into potential asset recovery is expected.
